Small School Tight Ends for the 2007 NFL Draft

Three Small School Tight Ends have been chosen to attend the prestigious 2007 NFL Combine:

Michael Allen, Whitworth College
Division III superstar Allen will participate in the 2007 NFL Combine and will play in the 2007 Dell East-West Shrine Game. The Shrine Game will be played at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas on January 20th and will be carried live in prime time by ESPN2.

Allan will play on the West squad in the Shrine Bowl. The head coach of the West this season will be Dan Reeves, who coached both the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons to the Super Bowl. Allan is the only NCAA Division III player currently invited to participate in the Shrine Game. Allan is also the only NCAA Division III player invited to the NFL Combine, scheduled for February 21-27 in Indianapolis, Indiana. According to the official combine website, Top Executives, Coaching Staffs, Player Personnel Departments and Medical Personnel from all 32 NFL teams will be on hand to evaluate 300 of the nation's top college football players eligible for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Allan caught 53 passes for 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns in 2006. He led the Northwest Conference in touchdown receptions and yards per catch (20.8), earning First Team All-NWC honors for the third straight year. He closes his career with school records for touchdown receptions (29) and yards per catch (18.7). Allan has been named to the AP Little All-America First Team, the AFCA Division III All-America team for the second year in a row, and the D3football.com All-America First Team.
In 2005 he was named to the AFCA Division III All-America team after catching 36 passes for 693 yards (19.2 yards per catch). He set a new school record with 15 touchdown receptions, breaking the old record set in 1975 by Doug Long, who went on to play three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Kevin Boss, Western Oregon
Despite playing in only six games due to a shoulder injury Western Oregon’s Kevin Boss has been selected to attend the 2007 NFL Combine. The 2nd team d2football.com All-American had 33 catches, five touchdowns and 403 yards in receptions. The 6-7, 255-pounder was a four-year starter for the Wolves and leaves the program fourth in career touchdown catches with 19. The 6 foot 7 255 pound senior finished sixth all-time at WOU with 134 career receptions. His 1,590 reception yards are eighth on WOU’s all-time list and his 19 touchdowns in four seasons is the fourth highest in school history.

Gijon Robinson, Missouri Western
This selection really surprised me, but Gijon Robinson was indeed selected to attend the 2007 NFL Combine. Robinson is a talented tight end, but at only about 6-2 260 pounds he might have to play fullback and/or special team to have a shot in the NFL. Robinson is a heck of a blocker and a very athletic pass catcher, in 2006 he was mostly used as a blocker and caught only 25 passes for 253 yards for 1 TD, but over his career he has shown to be a very consistent tight end with a combined 83 catches for 1057 yards and 7 TDs.

What about Zac Herold? I watched the Hula Bowl and he looked pretty athletic. It looked like he might have potential as a receiving TE.

As a fan of 1AA Ohio Valley Conference, the 2 best TE's I saw in '06 were Bugg from EKU ( mainly more of a wideout, not a true TE) and the best blocker was Boyack from SE Missouri. Bugg has stats because of EKU's passing offense, the other player was in a run-oriented offense but has good hands.

Thanks for the comments, I plan on adding those guys to my lists, which I am currently fine tuning. These three guys that I highlighted here were the small school guys that were invited to the 2007 NFL Combine.

The best tight end in Divison 1 2 or 3 is Jeff Postell Delaware State University. Former basketball player 6'5 247 4.5 40yd Blocking and catching tightend

Against top rated Pass rushers like Kendall Landford (Hampton University) and others....Jeff Postell dominated the line and also displayed tremendous power, and speed. At 6'51/2 255 lbs, he is a true TE not a modified wide reciever. Former basketball player caught game winning TD against Hampton University (13th ranked), and open huge holes at the point od contact
