Image: Ramses BardenEvery year a player is drafted without the media hype and the accolades announcing his coming hall of fame career. Yet this player or players have seasons that surprise the experts and even the teams that draft them. Below I've listed some of the top small school prospects for the 2009 NFL Draft in a look ahead to what is to come.
WR Ramses Barden, 6' 6" 228 lbs. Cal Poly 4.63:
He is 6'6" 228 lbs and bound to garner much attention at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2009. He had a couple of 200-yard games in 2007 and over the course of last season averaged 26 yards per catch. He is tough and strong and can break a ton of tackles. He has good hands and the size to excel in the red zone. His 4.63 40 time leaves something to be desired, but his big frame will be a good target at the next level. Right now, he's being projected as a 5th round pick. If he can improve his forty time into the 4.55 range he may move up into the third round possibly next year.
RB Herb Donaldson, 5' 11" 220 lbs. Western Illinois 4.53:
He has a good blend of size and speed and the vision to make the cut and attack the holes as they open. He piled up 1,491 yards last year. Many believe he could be a quality number two back for almost anyone who drafts him, maybe even a good starter.
TE Darius Hill, 6' 5" 235 lbs. Ball State 4.64:
He set a school record for a tight end with ten touchdown catches in 2006. Word has it he may move from TE to WR this year. It is possible this may hurt his draft stock somewhat but with good hands and speed. He has run in the 4.64 40 yard dash range. He should be taken in the middle rounds a potential TE prospect or WR project if he can get his 40 time down into the 4.55 range.
DE/OLB Brandon Swain, 6' 4" 255 lbs. West Texas A&M 4.69:
He is one of the most athletic defensive ends coming into the 2009 NFL Draft. He had 14 sacks and five forced fumbles last year. He is a quarterbacks nightmare. He has good speed off the edge and a desire to get in the backfield and make plays. His 40 yard dash time of 4.69 is quite impressive for a lineman. He should be a steal in the middle rounds.
CB Darren Banks, 5' 11" 185 lbs. West Liberty 4.43:
A former Marshal player before he transferred in 2004. He has good speed and the hands for the interception. He has all the tools to be a good playmaking corner in the league. He led his conference with ten interceptions last year.
QB Armanti Edwards 6'0" 180 Appalachian State 4.44:
He is an incredible athlete for a quarterback running a sub 4.5 40 yard dash. He is a excellent leader with a fairly strong arm and all the intangibles you could ask for. He doesn't always make the best decisions but he is coachable with a lot of upside. He nearly set his conferences rushing record with 1,588 yards last year. He completed 65% of his passes displaying excellent accuracy throwing on the run. Unfortunately at only six feet tall and 180 pounds he may be better off moving to wide receiver in the NFL. He will be a junior in 2009, so he may declare early, if not he will be one of the best late round QB options in the 2010 draft. If he declares in 09 he could go as early as the middle rounds, as next years draft class is considered to be one of the weaker ones at quarterback. He might start in this league at quarterback or be a good slot receiver somewhere, that much I am sure of.

Brandon Swain is going to suprise people as to when he's going to be picked come next April, I doubt he makes it past the second round. And another West Texas A&M defensive lineman to watch for in 2009 is Dexter Manley's son. He transferred from Oregon and sat out most of 2008.
hi, love the blog. every year canada has 1 or 2 guys sign FA deals. 2009 they have a blue chip prospect. Vaughn Martin out of Western: check out these numbers from the school website for spring camp
6'4 315 DT
40 time: 4.84
225 test: 32
vertical: 30.5
He's been featured all over in Canada on TSN, espn's canadian partner. In what looks like a relatively weak DT crop, could a Canadian kid go in round 1?
If your interested in a true small school prospect, check out Jon Davis from Azusa Pacific University. The football program is an NAIA independent. His stats for the 2007 season were:
Games /No./Yds/ Avg/ TD/ Avg/Game
11 73 1258 17.2 21 114.4
Check out Greg Betterson WR out of Delta state. He comes out with the CB spoken about in this post..Betterson has great ball skills he's about 6'0 he attacks the ball when it's in the air like he's 6'6 also run's pretty good routes but more important he makes plays.Would be a great pick up for a team...He's a 4.4 guy I heard he has apretty good vert and a 11' broad jump..Check him out..
I posted something on here the other day about the delta kids but It's not showing up.But the CB your refering to is D.Spinks bout 6'1 6'2 190-195 high 4.4 low 4.5.Greg Betterson is a Great player also He's a 4.4 guy with some pretty good numbers in the broad 11' and 35+ vert Very explosive with the ball in his hands.those 2 should def get into a camp.they both make plays on the feild.
The Cornerback and Returnman For Alcorn State University is the only underclassmen to make all conference he will be a junior next season he is 5'11 180 pounds this kid will be a big time prospect come 2010....
Check out Ryan DelRosal OT from Dixie State. 6'5 310lbs runs a 4.94and is getting look at big time from alot of NFL teams. He is on a ton of draft websites and is projected 2nd day guy
How about a kid by the name of Quincy Wofford out of the University of Northern Colorado. I saw him when they played E. Washington. He was clocked at a 4.35 multiple times. He's a 6'2 185lbs cornerback. This kid can play football.
Keep you eyes on Joey Falcon @ Santa Monica College 6'2" 250 runs a 4.7. The kid smokes all blockers on his blitz. From Miami Fl. North Miami Beach Sr high. Is considered to be a raw talent. His downfall is his work ethic.
I was looking up a few of the mentioned players and the kid out of Cal Poly is defintely a solid pick offensively but defensively this Quincy Wofford really caught my attention. I hadn't heard of him until a previous post but he could surely be a sleeper in the draft. Besides his speed he had some solid numbers in his first year & according to his school's site he has two more years left. I'll definately be keeping my eyes on this young man.
Armanti Edwards is so awesome ! he would be a great pick for any NFL team.
Totally unknown by most; but is being watched closely by NFL scouts.
Jameson Konz TE Kent State
6'-3 1/2" 232 Converted from LB to TE for senior season.
Fastest TE in the 2009 draft - clocked at 4.38 in the 40 by NFL scouts and has 41" vert. Solid hands.
what about Jon Davis WR at Azusa...although naia, played exceptionally against div 1 teams...2nd in all college in tds...being looked at by scouts and definitely one to watch this fall.
Check out 6'4'' 220lbs WR Rocky Coleman out of UNA...
Davis out of Azusa is good but Arena at best. DelRosal out of Dixie on the other hand will be playing on sundays.
you need to check out the running back and QB for Abilene Christian University
One of the top return specialist/WR in small college football is Larry Beavers (5-11 175) from Wesley College Div III in Delaware. He has been timed at 4.28 and has 8 KO Rt for TDs and 3 punt returns for TDs in the last 2 years even though they rarely kick to him. NFL Scouts have said he will probably be drafted.
DEREK DEARDORFF WR Malone University 6'4' 215 In '08 69 receptions for 1155 yards receiving; 14 tds, ave 115.5 per game. Low 4.6 last winter in snow for nfl scouts. 4.5 type game speed. Check him out at NFL Draft Bible and NFL Scout. Unblemished character!
Has anyone checked out Kendale Rayford from Louisiana college? He leads all divisions in passes defended. He has been looked over because of injuries but is an all-conference 4.4 corner with great reaction.
Davis "arena at best"? You are nuts...http://www.youcastr.com/casts/archive/t-man-2008-east-coast-bowl-2008-east-coast-bowl
T-Man thinks you're wrong about that one.....Davis is the king of the one-handed catch. Everyone went crazy when Davis got the ball. Tons of nfl scouts at the East Coast Bowl apparently think you're wrong too!
University of Miami walk on Joey Falcon. 6'2" 255 with alittle work ethic the kid will be a stud. Played football at North Miami Beach Sr. Coached by Jeff Bertani.
-State of Florida 2 way player of the year.
-Gatorade 3 time player of the week voted by ESPN.
Keep tabs on this kid!!!
Jarrett Dillard WR / James Casey WR/TE
- Both these players will make a big impact in the NFL, although unknown to the common fan because they both play at RICE
- Rice has the 5 ranked offense in D1 right now
John Mattews from San Diego... Dude is sick. Look at the numbers from year to year, big time slot potential
Rice is still a D1 school and I think Dillard will find a team because if it. I think Jon Davis is a big time sleeper and I expect him to be a steal for someone. I dont why i'm not getting credited for these articles anymore but no biggie I guess.
Fred Wells WR from Northern Michigan a D2 school, this kid has been watched and runs a 4.37, 6'2 200lbs
Mike Ferguson-RB NC A&T. His team sucked, but he had good career.
Fred Wells from northern michigan is a sleeper....watch out for this kid....hes a great athlete..going from WR to RB and also PR and KR and hes just amazing....keep tabs on him
Derek Deardorff WR 6'4" 215 All-American from Malone University wrapped up his four-year playing career as Malone's all time leader in receptions (165), receiving yards (2,838) and touchdown catches (32). Derek led the NAIA this season with 115.5 receiving yards per contest. 24 NFL scouting teams have personally visited him. Very Impressive!
Alcorn State has a cornerback thats very talented he shuts down one side of the field he will be a big time player in the 2009-2010 season this kid can fly and he is a great athlete
Anyone know if Michael Desormeaux of the Ragin Cajuns in Lafayette, Louisiana has a chance of being drafted
Take a look at this unsung hero from University of Maryland who posted the stats below at a recent Pro Day at Maryland. He is a plugger at nose tackle for the Terrapins.
